I HATE YO uyqbyufbtwyubxyuiwbtfyitbieruxbtfuiwbtyiufbtirwetxufrbtwyuixbtwyubxtuiywbr FIne I'll just copy paste. Actually lets not. Time for: NOVELS!!! THis is a random story I found I have no idea what it says and I cant be bothered but maybe you would: Carson lifted his unchecked suitcase and computer backpack into the overhead bin and settled into his aisle seat. He’d checked the seating map while waiting to board and saw that someone had claimed the window near him. As a frequent flyer he’d boarded early but didn’t have enough points to upgrade out of cattle-car-coach. After glancing around the cabin, he was thankful that there were still plenty of aisle and window seats unclaimed so the middle seat beside him would likely remain empty. With some reason to hope, he tried on the seat belt but, despite his doctor’s imperative to cut back, he was disappointed when it proved to be too short to reach across his waist. He sighed and thought, At least I’m closer than last month, as he caught the eye of a flight attendant to request a belt extender. Skipping the morning bagel helped but the next to go must be the morning donut. But before it gets any later, I need my ginger. But a frazzled woman distracted him by pausing in the aisle next to his knee. She fumbled with her backpack, purse and suitcase to recheck her boarding pass then meekly said, “Excuse me sir, I think that window seat is mine.” He smiled back and answered, “No worries. Let me stand to let you in.” Carson was a big guy with long legs. His natural sense of gallantry drove him to stand for her rather than making her climb over the legs of a stranger. “Can I help stow your things in the overhead bin?” From behind exasperated eyes, she answered, “Only if you want to be the first good thing to happen to me this week. I hate flying – but” she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, “Thanks for the kind offer. I’ll try not to bother you again.” “No worries, my pleasure. This is such a long flight,if you need anything you’d be doing me a favor to have me stand to retrieve it for you.” Hmm, he thought as he stowed her things, she looks even more anxious than me. I really should be used to this. Maybe it’s time to hand off Singapore to some young buck who wants to spend half his life at thirty thousand feet. I hope she’s not going to be a nuisance. This flight is too long to be seated close to a basket case. I should try to help her. He’d finished settling her things when the attendant arrived with his extender, leaving him to deal with the sting of embarrassment as he installed it. Ugh! I almost forgot my ginger. He stood back up to reach into his backpack for a zip-lock bag of ginger candies. Hope it’s not too late. Hoping to get enough ginger before takeoff, he took a double dose. The cabin crew completed their tasks, the doors secured, and the aircraft backed away from the terminal. He willed the ginger candy to quickly metabolize into his blood stream – hoping it would calm his air sickness while they waited their turn to take off. After inching their way to the head of the line, he gripped both armrests as the engines spun up, transforming the cabin into what felt and sounded like a rattling rocket, pressing his back into the seat. Each bumpy second of the aircraft gaining speed was unsettling and he clamped his jaw as the aircraft tilted up, and the aisle transformed into a rocking up-hill path. Only a few more moments. Just a few more. . . His stomach dropped as the jet gently jumped up from the runway allowing most of the cabin vibration to stop. The safety record is clear. These things can fly; he told himself yet again. The jet clawed for altitude and finally began to level off. The engines and myriad control surfaces settled into their cruising settings allowing his anxiety to unwind. Anxious now to see clear morning sky above the cloud cover he glanced toward the window. The sky was fine but his partner in the window seat was almost ivory-white with fear. She’s suffering worse than me. “Excuse me, ma’am. Are you okay?” The woman, with pinched eyes, took a deliberate deep breath, forced herself to relax her death-grip on the armrests and seemed to regain control before answering, “Yea — yes I am. I’m fine now that the shaking stopped. I’m sorry but did I mention how I hate flying?” “I understand. You certainly looked frightened. San Francisco winds really knock us around sometimes but that was tame compared with several take-offs I’ve survived. Once we get a bit higher, we should have smooth air most of the trip. Do you fly much?” “No — heavens no! But this is going to be one long flight. I started in Phoenix and the winds there really knocked us around. The poor guy I sat next to said it was unusually windy. Not a good way to start a long flight. But I’m determined to not bother you.” “Don’t worry. I’ve done this a lot, hating each flight but have learned how to cope. You seem like a pleasant person who just hates flying – just like me.” Hoping to distract himself and her with some light conversation he asked, “Have you been to Singapore before?” “No. I never wanted to go there but knew that one day, I’d have to. I hope my flight home will be the last time I fly. I’m not a very good airline passenger. I’ve been dreading this trip, and I got almost no warning that I had to travel today. I know almost nothing about Singapore, had to find it on a map, barely had time to pack and arrange for someone to take care of my dog.” “Um,” he uttered. “This really is a very long trip. I prefer direct flights like this one, but it does mean a very long one-and-done excruciation. This time it’s going to be something like seventeen and a half hours. It will feel long enough for us to age and retire. I find it best to rest as much as I can, eat light, read or watch movies and make friends if possible. The hardest part is the time change. Singapore is sixteen hours ahead of California and it takes me almost two days to begin to feel normal.” She rolled her eyes and grumbled, “Oh damn! It just keeps getting better. I hadn’t thought about the time change.” She pinched her eyes shut and shook her head. “He’s setting me up for failure again! Damn him!” “Oh. Let me guess. You let someone schedule an important meeting without giving you time to adjust to local time – right?” “Yep.” “Can I ask who; your boss, a customer, or—” “My ex. We share custody of our son, but soon after our settlement, he took him and moved to Singapore – where he’s effectively enjoying full custody because I can’t afford flying back and forth. So, I’m blowing a lot of lawyer money arguing with him. The price of this seat is tanking my budget, and I have no idea how to get this fixed.” “Yuck. So, you’re just trying to get your normal custody rights back?” “Yea – but he has his family’s money and the home court advantage. Even if he lets me have my son back, I can’t afford to fly us home. I’m completely under his thumb, but I’ve gotta try.” “Can I ask their names and your son’s birthdate? I’m an attorney and I might be able to help.” She quickly considered and decided that maybe God was sending her an impossible answer and she couldn’t think of a downside, so she answered him. Carson pulled out a pocket notepad and wrote down the information before asking, “And did you get any sleep last night?” “No. Not really. I was packing and being anxious.” “How do you sleep when flying?” “Well, let’s see. The few times I’ve tried, and this might surprise you,”’ she answered sarcastically, “I’m terrible with that too.” “Well, maybe I can help. I know some tricks if you’d be interested.” “So you know, I’m normally that independent gal who hates needing help, but in this case, yes, I would welcome it. I’m so nervous and . . .” She turned to face him, “well, thank you. What can I . . . what should I do?” “Good. First things first. You really need to get some rest. Not having slept well last night is actually going to help. It’s what, 8:30 or 8:40 AM our time which means it’s, um, it’s approaching midnight in Singapore. Sleeping now would help you adjust to where the sun will be when we arrive. We should knock you out now.” She smirked and laughed a bit but agreed that sleep sounded wonderful. “I can barely keep my eyes open so this makes sense. What’s the trick?” “Do you have a water bottle, and do you like green tea?” “Yes, and yes, but how—?” “Can I see it?” “It’s in my carry-on, just above your head.” He got up and opened the bin. “Ah, I see a red Nalgene bottle in your backpack.” “That’s it.” “Ah, and it’s a wide-lid bottle. Perfect! I’ll be right back.” In a few minutes he returned and handed her the bottle. “I always travel with extra green tea bags. I had our attendant fill it to about three quarters with hot water then added 2 tea bags to begin steeping. After 2 minutes, I took them out and had her top it off with cold water so now it’s warm enough to gulp rather than sip. “Most green teas steep in about three minutes but if you take the bags out after two you get less caffeine, and most of the flavor. So: hot water to comfort and hydrate then green tea to relax. Next, do you like ginger … ? Great! Here – take the lid off and I’ll drop in a ginger candy ball for just a hint of sweet and the comfort of ginger repairing any damaged DNA.” “Ginger does that? I’ve never heard—.” “No – it doesn’t. I made that up.” She laughed then gave him a look of mock distrust. “I have no idea how it works, but it’s soothing. Take the lid off … There. Now let it melt as you drink.” “Mm – it sure smells good but is my water bottle going to make everything taste like ginger now?” “Only for the next five or ten fill-ups, but you might like it enough to keep adding more. This might be a new addiction – who knows? I have some friends in the Air Force who tell me they use ginger candy for motion sickness, so if a bit of caffeine is okay by you, it should work wonders.” She sat back and held her bottle up to note that the bottle itself was now comfortably warm and the candy inside was indeed melting. She swirled the bottle and lifted it to watch the small ball of candy shrink as it spun around, then opened the lid to take a taste. “Um, I’ve had ginger tea before but never like this.” She took a larger gulp. As it covered her tongue, her eyes closed, her lips curled into a pain-free smile and a low voice found its way out. “Mm — this is sooo gooood. Could become a very pleasant addiction. What’s next – um, I don’t even know your name. I’m—” “Kari, you’re Kari Wong, right?” Her eyebrows narrowed in suspicion. “Uh – how did you kn— ” “Luggage tag on your backpack. I’m Carson Hart.” “Ah – whew. Thought I had a benevolent weirdo stalker for a moment.” A fun reply – I like her. “But you don’t look like a Wong-kinda gal.” “You’re right. I’m not. It’s an artifact of my failed marriage. I’ve never been out of the US before and would love to change my name back, but it takes time and money I don’t have.” He reached into his pocket for his wallet to pull out a business card and show his ID. “I don’t want you to have any doubts, so,” he rolled his hand to show her his ring, “I’m happily married and have no motives other than earning the benevolent part of your wise suspicion and making a travel friend. I don’t know how to be a stalker but,” he handed her the business card saying, “I could live with being a benevolent friend.” She swallowed another large gulp, wiped her lips on the sleeve of her well used sweatshirt before answering, “Humph. That’s almost too bad . . . um,” she paused to read his name from his card. “Phillip Carson Hart: Attorney at Law; I might have entertained a benevolent stalker but will welcome the counsel of a benevolent friend. You mentioned having a plan for knocking me out. I’m ready to hear it.” “For the record, I go by Carson. My employer thought my full name inspires more professional confidence. No – keep the card. That same employer likes it when I give them out.” “Sir, I need you to take your seat please. We’re starting our drink service.” “Ah – of course Ma’am. Thank you.” The flight attendant smiled and squeezed past as he reached into the bin, grabbed a blanket then sat down. “Here’s my recommendation. You finish all your tea while it’s hot and we’ll chat while you get thoroughly hydrated. Then I’ll have our attendant fill up your bottle with hot water again, but this time it will be all hot. You’ll wrap your very hot bottle with your scarf and then curl up under this aero-dynamic blanket cuddling with your rolled-up coat and your very warm scarf-wad. The ginger tea will warm you from within while the hot water bottle warms you from without. You’ll likely sleep through lunch so, unless you’re starving, I’ll let you sleep – your call but I’ll default to letting you sleep as long as possible.” “Hmm. That might work. This tea is wonderful, I’m stealing this idea, and I’m ready to test your ginger tip. A good snooze with a warm tummy and this scarf-wad concept, might just break my run of bad luck.” “I’ve had women tell me they like cuddling with my scarf-wads more than their husbands.” Kari snorted a quick laugh. “And Carson, I apologize in advance if I snore.” “No! Say it ain’t so.” “There have been accusations from sketchy witnesses.” “Well, I’m a seasoned traveler who always packs his trusty ear plugs so bring it on.” After finishing her tea, Carson took her bottle back where a flight attendant refilled it with hot water. She pressed the warming scarf to her stomach and wrapped herself beneath the blanket. Its warmth spread throughout her body and she closed her eyes as her tension began to unwind. Just before Kari dropped off, she uttered, “Carson, I feel so much better . . . Please wake me for lunch . . . I want the chicken thing . . .” And with that, her head and jaw dropped, and she was out. Carson thought, Huh, that worked better than expected. Sleep well, Ms. Kari. He had some email to process, so he pulled out his computer to work for a couple of hours before napping until mealtime. First, he connected to the Wi-Fi to look up the names she’d given him. Gotcha. Let’s see what’s happening to you, Ms. Karilyn Wong. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Two hours later, she stirred enough to twist in her seat, dropping the scarf-wad to the floor. Carson picked it up and replaced it beneath the blanket, next to her thigh. An hour later, when Carson tried to wake her for lunch, Kari only mumbled, “umkay. Just another min . . . .” She buried her eyes into her rolled-up coat, squirmed deeper into her seat before blasting out one mighty snore. Carson chuckled and ate his meal leaving Kari’s on the middle tray table. After trying and failing a couple more times to wake her up, he gave it back and asked the flight attendant to keep it for her – all except for the dessert which he kept to have ready for when she finally woke up. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Three hours later, she exploded awake yelling, “BATHROOM! I need a bathroom NOW!” They both scrambled to get her out and on her way. Minutes later a much more controlled Kari squeezed past him and plopped into her seat. “Wow! Who knew that Mickeys taste like sweet ginger green tea? Carson, your knockout hack worked scary well. The scarf-wad was like a sauna. I don’t think I even dreamt. How long was I out?” He laughed, answering, “Would you believe over six hours?” “No way! Six? Wow!” She settled back into her seat before continuing her thought. “I’m absolutely stealing that trick too. It was brilliant and so easy. I might appropriate and call it ‘deep-wrapped heat-cuddling relaxation therapy.” “Ha! Glad it worked. You were so tired it almost couldn’t fail, but I have been rightly accused of offering enteric-coated advice”. “Enteric-coated advice?” Kari snorted and laughed out loud. “I’m so stealing that idiom? How long have you been looking for a victim to force-feed it to?” “Ha! Only a few months. My doctor dropped it on me the last time she tried to get me to pay more attention to my diet.” “Well, I might add it to my smart-Alec collection too and . . . . Wait! Six hours!? Does that mean I missed lunch?” “Only by about two – “ He spun his wrist up to check his watch, “Yes, and a half. Two and a half hours.” “Aww, you should have woken me up.” “I tried but you begged for a few more minutes before snoring once, loudly, and abandoned all consciousness.” “I did not snore. I would have woken myself up.” “Hm, you could ask anyone within ten rows. I’m sure they’ll confirm how loudly you didn’t snore.” “Ulp – that loud?” “Oh yea. If I’d known what was coming, I would have recorded it. It – was – epic! You would have enjoyed when the business class attendant popped in to ask if anyone was injured.” “Stop it. You’re making it up,” she said in a half-mortified, half-laughing voice. “Am not. You were so loud that you startled all the emotional support dogs; left them howling and the pilot mistakenly apologized for the unexpected turbulence.” “Oh… Now I see who you really are. A benevolent stranger with a mean streak.” “Naw, just playful. Can I bribe my way back into your grace by telling you how I kept your dessert for you?” Carson stood up and pulled out a small bowl covered in a paper napkin from the overhead bin. “Their cinnamon and shaved almond cake-like thing is by itself worth the price of your ticket, but if you don’t want it …” “Oh no! I usually avoid cake-like foods but this one time – g’me it!” He handed it to Kari who instantly opened her tray table, anxious to tear into it. She first lifted the plate to examine it. “Um Carson…?” she said in her best mock-suspecting voice. “This corner looks … what – shaved off? “Did you taste-test my dessert?” “Madam,” he sniffed. “I am crushed that you would think me capable of such a deed. I was raised to protect any woman in my influence from being poisoned.” “I see. Actually, I think you already ate yours and hoped I wouldn’t want mine. After the morning I’ve had, that was a bad bet counselor.” She eyed the damaged corner one last time, decided to ignore it and took a bite. She closed her eyes to focus on the taste of this rare treat. With the bite still in her mouth, she mumbled “Oh my. . . , I can’t recall the last time I tasted such a sugar bomb, but this is sooo good! Lacking your dubious gallantry, I would have missed this heaven-sent therapy. I forgive whatever you did to my dessert, but you’ve left me compromised. “Your travel hacks and sarcasm turned my distress into comfort but I can’t decide if I need to send a condolence card to your wife for having to live with you or a note to advise her that if you ever disappear – like kidnapped disappear, she should call me before calling the cops because I might be responsible.” “Ha. She’d make you regret capturing me because she’d likely tell you she’d be willing to pick me up no-sooner than after 60 days so she could get a break from having me around. You might receive a thank-you card for giving her some peace. Wait! What time is it?” Carson glanced at his watch. “Ah, you have 45 minutes to decide if you really want your lunch. It won’t be as fresh, but the flight attendant promised to hold one for you if we claimed it on time.” “This is quite a favor. Are you so well known that you can pull such favors?” “Ha – not even close. They have to close down the galley for other duties soon.” “Well. I’m really hungry for something other than my healthy snacks so I’ll take you up on the offer of enjoying my lunch even after enjoying the dessert.” “Very good. Back in a bit. She’ll have to zap your entrée to warm it up. Maybe she’s so busy that she won’t recall how you already had a dessert.” “Seriously?! Two desserts? You’re destroying my self-discipline.” Carson just smiled and turned to retrieve the delayed meal. “Here you go. One hot chicken-thing with a side of pre-chewed, artificially colored, remastered substance that started life as a nearly flightless bird and gum-laced creamed vegetable relic as requested but no second dessert unfortunately. “Kari, do you have tums handy or medication from your backpack before I sit down?” “Thank you, nope and no thank you. I’m good. My mood has greatly improved thanks to your tea and hot water bottle sleeping trick. Except for a horrific case of dry mouth, it worked better than a normal night’s sleep.” Kari prepared her first bite and asked, “So, tell me, what kind of law do you practice?” “Nothing special. I do contracts, basic immigration between Singapore and the US, and some family law. And you? I suspect you’re a professional something.” “Good catch! I was a registered nurse, got tired of back injuries from lifting patients, connected with two great endocrinologists who advised me to get my CDCES credential . . . aaaand . . . yes, there’s the look of confusion we always get with that mouthful of random letters. It stands for Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist. It’s kinda new. The need is huge, the money is decent, but we’re not so well known by patients or insurance folks but we’re growing because people eat so badly due to lack of knowledge.” “Ah, we used to call you guys food nazis. I’ll admit that I’ve hated talking diet with my doctor. I’ve fought with my weight since high school. I still just want to eat what I want to eat.” “Yea – I noticed your challenge from the moment we met.” “Really? Do I look that bad?” ‘No, It’s not that. You just suffer from the common symptom of “Circumferential Restraint Insufficiency”. “Wha–what? Oh – I get it. I’ve only needed a seatbelt extender for about four months, but never suspected there was a medical term of art for . . . wait!” Carson leaned back to stare at the ceiling while shaking his head. “There isn’t, is there?” He turned to face her satisfied grin. “You made that up. Touche Kari! That’s hysterically rude and painfully accurate.” “Not to mention being one of the most satisfying retorts I’ve ever delivered.” “My wife would applaud you, but I suspect someone like you could help me make real changes. My doctor is giving me talking points and sound bites about changing my diet and I’ve been resisting her efforts. She wants me to consider these GPT-1 shots, better balance my sugar and carbs with fiber or protein and eat more perishable versus processed and preserved food. Somehow indigestible xanthan-ish gums are everywhere and Soylent Greens are back in vogue.” Kari laughed out loud but quickly calmed as she arranged her reply. “Ha ha! Wait. Slow down. Xanthan-ish sounds more diabolical than digestible. And yea – I can imagine how your poor doctor, who has less than 10 minutes to get you on board would not pause to explain those gums or soylent greens and . . . oh. Does that smirk betray who actually mentioned soylent greens first? You said it to her right . . .? Yea, I thought so. You might appreciate that I’ve gotten some decent mileage from the axiom, Man can’t live from mac-n-cheese alone. “But – wow! Where to start from your summary? First, you said GPT-1 when you had to be referring to GLP-1. My question now is did you just confuse the AI ChatGPT with the celebrity hormone GLP-1 by mistake or intentional mischief? “Hm. Your smirk settles the question. I bet your doctor says you are type 2 diabetic.” “She always says type 2 PRE-diabetes.” “And what’s your A1C?” “I don’t recall but she says it’s too high.” “Understood. She’s likely trying to wave you away from breads, pasta and cookies, in favor of soy, lentils and leafy greens. “I’m sensing that you’ve been down this road Kari. For a stranger, you know way too much about me.” “I’m 96% sure that you’re torturing your pancreas and need to knock it off. Trust me, you don’t want a crippled or dead pancreas. Your situation is very common with lots of options. A good GLP-1 treatment might be a great idea for you.” Carson made a reluctant face before agreeing, “Okay – yes – she’s suggesting Ozempic, that shot that’s all over the news. But I’ve already tried so many things to help me lose weight and doubt a weekly shot of anything is going to help.” “I’m not your doctor, but if she’s done your blood work, she’s likely correct. You would be amazed at how much it helps. Some of my patients have seen weight losses of 40, 60 or even 80+ pounds and their A1C dropping 1-3 full percentages. Carson, I’m telling you – you should try it. There are non-shot options, but the shot is one of the easiest things to accomplish. “The needle is very short, like a 1/8 inch, because it just needs to get below the skin into fatty tissue. Almost anyone can easily give themselves the shot in less than a minute.” Carson’s face suggested submission as he asked, “And my diet? I’ve tried all kinds of things to lose weight but now I’m hearing all about the foods that spike my blood glucose or metformin that smooths it out. It seems like if I like it – it’s bad for my BG. Orange juice and rice, bananas and bread, somehow were okay in high school but not now. I get why donuts should be avoided, and admit, I need help but I’m afraid of what regimented-eating would look like.” “Yea – I hear versions of this from all my patients. Here’s what I tell them: “One, a little education helps a lot. You’ll understand what to swallow and what to avoid, if you really engage the effort. “Two, you’ll still enjoy some favorites, but they’ll be budgeted, not binged. You’ll also discover lots of healthy treats to enjoy. “Three, everyone’s different. You’ll get a customized easy-to-follow plan. Your junk to real-food-ratio will drop and you’ll flat out live longer. “Four, I won’t drop a heavy list of changes on you. I’ll start with some low-hanging-fruity changes and wean you into eating better. It’ll be like a game my brother and I played as kids. My dad, before he died, was a real rocket scientist, a real nerd. He devised a game for us he called ‘asteroids.’ Carson’s expression immediately tightened at her mention of ‘asteroids.’ No way! He thought. That can’t be true. Kari noticed and asked, “Did I say something confusing or—?” “No – no, I’m good. Please continue.” “Sure. We had a long driveway surrounded by huge sycamore trees and in the fall, its large leaves would drop and curl into fist-sized clumps. On gusty days, we’d take turns running across the driveway trying to avoid these asteroids as the wind blew them around but dad’s rule was that we lost a round if we crashed into one as indicated by their loud crunching sound, but once we chose a direction and speed, we could only make slow changes because that’s how spacecraft work. We couldn’t just jam on the brake or turn sharply. We could make only small changes to avoid crashes. This is how we’d build your plan. Choose a direction and speed then make only small changes.” Noting that he was still troubled, Kari asked again, “I am saying something that’s bugging you. What is it?” “You said that your father taught you this game,” he said with brows pinched. “That can’t be right.” She was confused. “Yes, Dad taught us. We were very young, but it left a strong memory.” “What’s your brother’s name?” Kari wondered what Carson was driving at as she answered, “William Aster. We were like best friends until our parents divorced just before kindergarten.” “I don’t know a William Aster, but I too played this game. I played it with my friend, Caroline Aster.” “You did? You couldn’t have. It’s too unique for anyone else to know about and I only played it with William. I never showed anyone else.” Kari scrunched her face, thinking out loud. “Maybe William played it with your friend after he and mom left. Where did you play it: school, church or—?” “No, only my friend Caroline and I only played it on our long driveway, before mom and I moved when she and dad divorced.” “Oookay, something’s screwy here. My birth name was Karilyn (with a K) Aster. You say you played with Caroline Aster. Could they be the same person? What’s your birthday?” “I’ll be 41 on the 12th of next month.” Kari gasped. “Carson — that’s my birthday.” “What? No … Where’s your brother now?” “After their divorce, mom took William and moved away. Dad told me that they never wanted to see each other again. My mom wasn’t even willing to let my twin brother stay in touch, so,” shaking her head slowly, “I’ve had no clue where . . . .” “Before she passed, my mom told me about her divorce, but never said anything about a sister. She said she was afraid of dad, so she made us hard to find, new state, new job and changed her name. But she and I have the same last name. Is it possible that – wait, let me get my computer out. My manager pays for me to have in-flight internet, and I have access to public family records,” He fussed with the connection, but it finally worked. “It never occurred to me to look up my own birth records. Mom arranged the documents for my passport, so I’ve never actually seen my birth certificate – here we go,” He entered some information and the website displayed a progress spinner as it searched. They stared at the screen, both unsure of what they wanted to see but when the answer populated, Carson uttered, “Oh my God! My birth name was William Karlson Aster. Unbelievable!” “Carson – you’re William —you’re my twin!” She turned to see the disbelief in his face. “Um, dad’s full name was Derek Karl Aster, Mom must have adjusted your middle name, Karlson to Carson, maybe to avoid confusing you. Clever, I guess. I’ve always known I had a brother but never tried to find him because I was told that you didn’t want to be found. This is crazy. What are we missing?” “I . . .” Carson bit his lip as he thought it through one more time. “I don’t think we’re missing anything. This—it all rings true. Mom must have manipulated my memory.” He closed his laptop. “Occasionally, I wished for a sibling growing up, but Mom never . . . She poured her time into me, filled my days with interesting stuff, friends, faith and education but she never mentioned that I had a sister. I clearly recall that – her telling me that I played asteroids with A Friend. “Now – this looks like a lie; this from a mom who couldn’t even let me believe in Santa Claus.” Carson shook his head as if trying to shake off a heavy blanket of confusion. “Well! This is the most extraordinary thing that has ever happened to me. I’ve not even seen a case like this in my family law practice, but the documentation looks sound. The records are clear enough. You must be my sister, my twin sister AND I have a nephew.” “Okay.” Resigned, he said, “I’m brain-blown and, uh, need time to process all this. “Um – new topic please. Since we’re dancing with so many asteroids already, earlier I thought I might offer some help with your son. I looked up the names and pinged my partner in Singapore. She did some research first thing in her day. Your husband, Andrew Wong, is an expat from the US living and working in Singapore on a type of visa that requires him to have full custody of his son, Travis. He represented to the Singapore officials that he has full custody, but you know this is not true. “Do you know how badly he wants to stay in Singapore?” “Very badly – it has been his dream to move there with his family to be part of their business. I thought he just took Travis because he could, knowing I didn’t have the resources to fight him.” “Well, if you’d like to engage me as your attorney you’ll have everything you need. I need some pro bono work so it would be free, but now, and you could say that your brother, who is an expert on immigration matters can demonstrate that Andrew can be deported back to the US for misrepresenting his son’s status. “I could draft a letter of demand to him that resets the timing of your meeting and describes the leverage you have to take immediate custody of Travis. Both the US and Singapore courts strongly dislike being lied to and would almost certainly award you with full custody if consulted. I bet Andrew would prefer to settle out of court and bet he’d agree to pay all your travel expenses to prevent being exposed to Singapore Immigration. “It feels weird to say this but, Sis, can I be your attorney in this matter?” “ABSOLUTELY! It already feels too good to be true, but yes – I want both my son and my brother back.” “Great! I know the perfect restaurant in Singapore for the three of us to celebrate.” “Wonderful! And I’ll have a first draft ready for your new diet plan, little brother.” “What! How could you know which of us was born first?” “Dad told me. Said you were reluctant about coming out. So, now that I have ‘first-born’ authority, exactlyhow many donuts do you eat each week?” Carson dropped his chin and shook his head like a petulant younger child. “My daily donuts-be-damned! I am sooo busted.” “Don’t worry,” Kari smiled. “I’ll be the enteric helping you dodge any asteroid that looks like a donut.” All I read was that donut word at the very end :P.
